At 61, Larry Manwiller isn’t slowing down – he’s accelerating! Just a few years ago, running was a
distant memory, replaced by knee pain and a battle with his weight. Now, Larry’s a marathoner with
a spring in his step, conquering races and defying expectations. But his journey back to running
glory wasn’t without its challenges.
A Forced Hiatus and a Life-Changing Decision
Since his teens, Larry, a retired United States Air Force veteran, had always enjoyed running.
However in 2012, knee issues forced him to hang up his shoes. Following doctor’s orders, he
stopped running altogether. Over the next decade, the consequences were stark. Larry’s weight
climbed to 230 lbs (105 Kg), and he developed diabetes.
Faced with declining health, Larry knew he had to make a change. In 2021, he committed to a
healthier lifestyle and embraced regular walks, along with swimming and cycling. With consistent
effort, he shed pounds and regained his fitness. Reaching a weight below 200 lbs reignited his
passion for running, and he bought a new pair of running shoes to very slowly re-introduce his
favoured sport.
Back on the Road, But Not Sure Where to Go
Larry started slow, guided by his intuition. He trained for the 2023 Philadelphia Half Marathon
using a Garmin plan, achieving an impressive 2:03 finish. However, Larry craved a smarter, more
personalized approach. That’s when he discovered TrainAsONE.
Why Larry Chose TrainAsONE
Larry, with his Master’s in Computer Science, was intrigued by TrainAsONE’s AI-powered training
plans. So for his Marine Corps Marathon in October 2023, he switched to TrainAsONE.
Initially, Larry was sceptical. His training plan featured a good number of runs that were shorter and
slower than he would have expected. Yet, TrainAsONE’s friendly and knowledgeable support staff
were on-hand to provide insight and reassurance. He decided to trust the process, and keep to his
plan.
Larry knew from personal experience that all marathon plans advocate 20 to 23 mile longest runs,
and so his trust in TrainAsONE was tested to the limit when his plan presented him with a longest
run of ‘only’ 16 miles. But trust it he did.
Come race day, the results spoke volumes. Not only did Larry complete the marathon in a fantastic
time of 5 hours and 7 minutes (beating his previous record set in his youth by over 20 minutes!), but
importantly he had trained and raced pain-free. Even completing back-to-back training runs – a feat
he had never thought possible.
Larry was now a true believer, and TrainAsONE convert.
From Marathons to Milestones: A Rejuvenated Runner
Since then, Larry hasn’t looked back. His weight has dropped to a healthy 160 lbs (73 Kg), and his
running journey has flourished. He’s conquered the Space Coast Marathon, showcasing his
improvement with a 5:02 finish despite the heat.
But Larry isn’t just a marathon machine. He’s dominating shorter distances too: achieving podium
finishes in his category at the 5k distance; and his 10k time is now almost down to what he was
achieving when he was in his 20’s.
Larry’s sights are now set on even bigger goals – triathlons and even an Ironman! He credits
TrainAsONE’s highly efficient training for allowing him to achieve so much despite a busy life.
