My name is Dr. Sean Radford, and I’m not just the founder of TrainAsONE, I’m a runner just like you. My journey with running started on and around the rugby fields at school, but life took me down a different path. It wasn’t until I took a spontaneous decision to attempt the grueling Karimoor International Mountain Marathon (the KIMM, now called the OMM) that I rekindled my love for running – and discovered a glaring problem with traditional training methods.
From Rugby Star to Weekend Warrior
My love for running wasn’t always there. As a child, I spent countless hours on the rugby pitch, thriving in the camaraderie and competitive spirit of the sport. Rugby became my passion. I relished the physical challenges and the thrill of victory, and as captain had keen sense of strategy and a desire to learn the statistics behind winning gameplay. However, life took me down a different path when I entered medical school. The demanding academic schedule, long hours, and a need to earn money (achieved writing software) left little room for extracurricular activities, and sadly virtually all sport fell by the wayside.
Years passed, and physical activity became sporadic at best. I’d squeeze in the occasional late-night run around the streets of London, more for stress relief than anything else. I even played some five-a-side football with friends, but the competitive fire for sport remained dormant.
A Mountainous Challenge Awakens a Passion
Then, at the age of 30, something unexpected happened. A friend, Nick, casually invited me to join him in the legendary Karimoor International Mountain Marathon (the KIMM, now called the OMM), a grueling two-day event in the mountains with a challenging overnight camp-out – all requiring participants to carry their own equipment. Now, the KIMM wasn’t exactly a walk in the park, and with only three days’ notice, I knew I was in for a wild ride. Driven by a sense of adventure and a desire to push my limits, I said “yes”.
The KIMM proved to be a transformative experience. While I completed the first day, the second day became a battle against fatigue and injury. I was forced to walk the final 10 miles to the finish line, a humbling experience that left me physically and emotionally drained. As I crossed the finish line, I swore I’d “never again” attempt such a feat.
But something had changed. The KIMM, despite its challenges, had reignited my passion for running. Within days, the “never again” turned into a burning desire to conquer the mountain. I recognized that I needed to be in far better shape to face such a demanding event, and this time, I wouldn’t approach it blindly.
From Frustration to Innovation
Traditional training is one size fits all, but in reality one size fits none
Like many runners, I trained hard following generic plans and anecdotal advice. And while I finished the KIMM on my second attempt, the results were far from ideal. Determined to improve, I delved deeper into training practices and the science of running, uncovering a concerning truth about training plans and their methodologies:
- They lack scientific evidence – there is so much guesswork, common practice and myths aplenty.
- They do not work – 75% of people using them fail to achieve their target.
- They often lead to injury – up to 80% of runners experience an injury every year, and a third of people abandon a training plan due to injury.
Fueled by this frustration and my background in medicine and IT (in particular artificial intelligence), I envisioned a solution:
A machine learning AI-powered platform that generates personal training plans for any runner, at any level, aiming for any goal. A platform that would flex around the runner’s personal life, and continuously adapt to their progress.
The idea for TrainAsONE was born.
The Power of AI
TrainAsONE doesn’t rely on guesswork, anecdotal beliefs, myths, or outdated advice. It leverages the power of machine learning to analyze real-world data from countless runners. This data, combined with a “human-in-the-loop” approach, has allowed us to build a robust and adaptive system that constantly learns and improves.
Why TrainAsONE is Different
Here’s what sets TrainAsONE apart:
Personal (not personalised) Training
TrainAsONE doesn’t offer any form of one-size-fits-all approach. It’s plans are not ‘personalised’ or ‘tailored’ like other so-called AI offerings. It creates training plans explicitly to your unique fitness level, goals, and preferences.
Data-Driven Decisions
No more following generic plans based on personal opinions. TrainAsONE plans are formulated from the analysis and insights gleaned from millions of training kilometres, and backed by scientific evidence.
Reduced Injury Risk
The fundamental design of TrainAsONE prioritises safe training, generating a plan to minimize the risk of injuries, a common challenge for many runners.
Highly Configurable & Flexible
TrainAsONE builds your plan from the ground up – there is no rigid preconceived template to adhere to. Consequently, you won’t find the ubiquitous trope of plans – we don’t do ’12 week half-marathon plans’ or ‘beginner marathon plans’. Just training plans where you set your goal (or goals) and when you want to train. If you wish to get off the couch and train for an ultramarathon in 11 days, no problem!
Unbiased and Evolving
TrainAsONE is free from human biases and continuously learns, ensuring your training stays relevant and effective. People love TrainAsONE now – and with more data and the rapid advances in artificial intelligence that we are currently experiencing, it is only getting better and better.
Don’t just take my word for it.
I cannot recommend TrainAsONE highly enough and tell anyone and everyone who will listen that they must give it a go.
